演講者簡介 : Professor Ting Yuen Terry Cheung received his PhD from Washington University in St. Louis in 2018. He is an Assistant Research Fellow at the Institute of Economics at Academia Sinica. His research fields are Macroeconomics, Growth and Development, Economic Demography, and Economic History.
演講摘要 : This paper explores the interplay between demographic factors, technological adoption, and agricultural productivity. We propose a novel mechanism whereby the absence of child labor protection in developing countries leads to an oversupply of inexpensive child labor, thereby discouraging the adoption of modern technologies in agriculture. This is further compounded by parents' reduced investment in the human capital of children who work, leading to lower labor productivity. Our findings suggest that enhancing child labor protections and promoting technological adoption in agriculture can significantly narrow the productivity gap between agricultural and non-agricultural sectors, particularly in developing countries.
