演講者簡介 : Professor Chia-Yu Tsai received her Ph.D. in Economics from Mannheim University. She is currently an Assistant Professor at the National University of Kaohsiung. Her research interests are Public Economics, Empirical Political Economy, Media Economics, and China Research.
演講摘要 : This paper examines the causal effects of political competition on economic transparency and how the relationship may influence social stability in an authoritarian regime, using China as a case study. The empirical evidence suggests that in counties with a concentrated power structure, county leaders are more likely to withhold economic statistics, which then helps reduce protest frequency. Even if economic statistics are publicly released, the figures are often exaggerated. Specifically, the empirical evidence shows greater discrepancies between reported GDP and nighttime light figures in counties with more powerful leaders or in counties with more competitors in the same prefecture.
