  • 演講摘要 : This talk summarizes several published and forthcoming articles in which I use machine-learning algorithms and a few unique data sets on legal rules around the world. The machine-learning algorithms used include those regarding classifications, dimension reductions, and clustering. The legal fields include property, antitrust, and constitutional law. These exercises have implications for economists in multiple ways: First, it shows why the legal origin as an instrumental variable in various "law and finance" (started by LLSV) and "economic development" studies is problematic. Second, GDP growth rates do not have a clear relationship with the substance of law. Third, standard microeconomic theories go along way toward explaining the convergence and divergence of legal rules around the world.
