演講者簡介 : Chun-Fang Chiang got her Ph.D. in Economics from Brown University in 2008. She is currently serving as Assistant Professor of Department of Economics at National Taiwan University. Her research field is in political economy, public economics, and labor economics.
演講摘要 : This paper empirically investigates how economic integration influences individuals’ national identity, using data from Taiwan. Due to historical reasons and special cross-strait politics, some people in Taiwan identify themselves as Chinese while others identify themselves as Taiwanese. In past decades, Taiwanese investments in China and trade with China have grown rapidly, and economic conflicts or benefits due to the economic integration may have changed the way individuals identify themselves. We combine data from Taiwanese Social Change Surveys with the outward investment data at the industry level to examine the effects of economic integration on national identity and voting behavior in Taiwan from 1992 to 2010. With time fixed effects and industry fixed effects, we find that the rising investment in China strengthens Taiwanese identity among unskilled workers but has had no or opposite effect on Taiwanese identity among skilled workers.
