演講摘要 : Adolescent delinquency is a strong predictor of later life outcomes, and yet its causes remain challenging to be quantified. In particular, parents can respond to delinquency and the social environment, leading to feedback effects. This paper estimates a joint model of parenting behaviour and delinquency, using a simple simultaneous equilibrium model that incorporates unobserved heterogeneity and exclusion restrictions. This allows us to not only identify the direct technology effect of child environment and parental inputs, but also disentangle feedback effects from aggregate responses. Parents exert less control when the child is more delinquent or when the peer environment deteriorates, implying a delinquency multiplier of 1.05. Identical interventions can generate different reduced form effects due to differences in parental responses.
