演講摘要 : We develop a framework to analyze network interoperability among competing platforms along two key dimensions: interoperability strength---the extent to which network benefits are shared across different platforms; and interoperability configuration---the structure of benefit-sharing (e.g., industry-wide vs. coalition-based arrangements). Contrary to conventional wisdom, we find that interoperability can enhance competition between symmetric platforms when (i) it generates within-coalition complementarity effects, or (ii) network benefits exhibit strong increasing returns to scale. In a dominant-fringe competition setting, we compare several configurations and show that a core-peripheral (star) configuration minimizes the market share of the dominant platform, whereas an industry-wide configuration maximizes consumer surplus, suggesting a trade-off between the two policy goals.
