  • 演講者簡介 : Professor Carol H. Shiue received her PhD from Yale University in 1999. She is a professor at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her research interests are in the economic history of market development and trade in China, the political economy of famine relief, and long-run comparisons of living standards. Another focus of her research is on kinship organization and social mobility.
  • 演講摘要 : In this presentation, I discuss how Chinese genealogies may be seen in terms of a family- and individual-level longitudinal dataset, the origins and promises of this type of resource, and discuss promising advances in OCR and AI to expand sample size. Focusing on seven clans in Anhui Province examples from recent research on social mobility and on family responses to big shocks illustrate how: 1) long-run processes take place intergenerationally, and 2) genealogical data allow us to separate the impact of shock on the people versus on the region.
