演講摘要 : To reduce the occurrence of road traffic accidents or the damage they cause, road markings and signs are commonly used to remind pedestrians and drivers to be cautious on the road. This study assessed Taipei’s Neighborhood Traffic Environment Improvement Program’s impact on road safety. The program involves extensive planning of marked pedestrian lanes on streets, lanes, and alleys, adjusting no-parking red and yellow lines, and painting slow-down and speed limit signs, etc. Using Poisson difference-in-differences and administrative data on traffic accidents, we find that the policy significantly decreases the number of daytime accidents by 5% and injuries by 8%, while the number of nighttime accidents and injuries is not affected. The program's effectiveness was influenced by sufficient sunlight, and we recommend providing adequate lighting in lanes and alleys to help road users clearly identify road markings and signs at night.
