  • 演講摘要 : In this paper, we develop a novel methodology based on the generalized error-in-variable (GEiV) model to account for the so-called life-cycle bias. We estimate the life-cycle bias directly from a representative cohort and then correct the estimates for intergenerational crime associations that are based on short-run proxies. We estimate the intergenerational elasticities between fathers and sons to be around 0.7 for the likelihood of crimes and 0.5 for the number of crimes. The estimated elasticities are stable across ages, birth cohorts, types of crimes, and either criminal charges or criminal convictions are used. The intergenerational elasticities between fathers and children appear to be stronger than those between mothers and children. We recommend this methodology to be applied to intergenerational association estimation for outcomes with a strong life cycle.
