  • 演講摘要 : The varied intensity in Thailand’s university opening across provinces and cohorts strongly predicts young women’s degree attainment but does not impact men outside Bangkok. We use this gendered first stage to study the gender gap in the career impact of degree attainment. Women’s educational advantage over men induced by the university expansion gives them more opportunities to enter the public sector or work more hours for hired jobs (but not necessarily full-time) while reducing their opportunity to get married. In contrast, the university opening gives men more full-time high-skilled jobs outside agricultural settings and more marriage opportunities, although the expansion has minimal effects on men’s education. Restricting data to married couples, we find Thailand’s university expansion makes women more likely to marry less-educated men, work more hours, and work more formally than their spouses, contrary to the gender-role hypothesis.
