Game Theoretic Precepts under the Microelectronics Revolution: Two Empirical Cases

  • 演講摘要 : As microelectronics innovations brought high complexity and high-frequency creative destructions to our lives, game-theoretic concepts, such as information and expectations, have gained greatly both prescriptive and descriptive relevance in contexts of relative practical importance. High complexity creates practical issues in implementation, and high frequency of creative destruction entails sequential responses. The first is how TSMC outdistanced Fujitsu as a contract semiconductor provider; and the second is how Apple replaced Nokia as smartphone leader. Both are paradigm case studies reflecting technological development, concerning how one manages life, and conducts production. The first is to find a second-best solution by mechanics design, and the second is in search of useful lessons in the particular context. This expository presentation is inspired by the 1982 classic The End of Four Big Inflations of Thomas Sargent, the 2011 Nobelist, who established the importance of the credibility of central bankers’ independence by proven analytic results with logic, and applying theory to life, though each research presents special challenges of its own. Borrowing an example from another field of conflict studies, Tsao Tsao (曹操) had illustrated The Art of War by Sun Tzu (孫子) by actual battles. There is some point to apply game theory as far as possible to real-life contests, to deduce applicable lessens.
