演講摘要 : In this paper, we estimate the causal effect of maternal education on child health in Africa, by exploiting variation in exposure to free primary education policies across countries and birth cohorts between 1976 and 2007. Using microdata from 22 African countries, we find policy exposure significantly increases women’s education attainment by one year. The extra schooling has a small but non-negligible protective effect on child health. The mechanism for the protective effect is that women who have more education have fewer children, exhibit more health-seeking behaviors, and have greater economic opportunities.
