Mobility Frictions and Misallocation: An Analysis of China’s Land Tenure System

演講者簡介 : Professor Chen received his Ph.D. in Economics from University of Toronto in 2017. He is currently an Assistant Professor at National University of Singapore. His research interests are in macroeconomics and economic development.
演講摘要 : We use household and individual-level panel data from China and a quantitative frame- work to assess the extent and consequences of factor mobility barriers on misallocation and aggregate productivity. We find that there are substantial frictions in both the land and labor markets associated with land institutions in rural China. We find that land frictions have substantial negative effects in agriculture, whereas land and labor mobility frictions have similar impacts on aggregate productivity. We also show that there is a substantial reduction in land frictions over time in the Chinese economy and an increase in the relative importance of labor mobility frictions.
