Pay Discrimination and Innovation Productivity: Evidence from the Passage of State-level Pay Secrecy Laws

演講者簡介 : Professor Hsu received his Ph.D. in Finance from Columbia University in 2007. He is currently a Professor of Finance in University of Hong Kong. His research interests are Asset pricing, technological innovations, entrepreneurship, and financial econometrics.
演講摘要 : We propose that pay equality enhances corporate innovation and inventor productivity, and we identify such effects using a difference-in-differences analysis based on the staggered passage of state-level pay secrecy laws that mitigate pay discrimination. We find significant increases in the quantity and quality of patents produced by firms and inventors in states that have passed such laws. Moreover, the effects of this legislation are more pronounced for firms in states with greater existing pay gaps with respect to gender and ethnicity. Further channel tests indicate that the passage of pay secrecy laws promotes innovation by motivating minority inventors to exert more effort and to engage in more teamwork.
