演講摘要 : The sex selection behaviour of altruistic parents in a monogamous marriage market is studied using an overlapping generations model with intra-household resource allocation. Our model highlights mechanisms through which the equilibrium sex ratio may be affected by the size and division of the marriage surplus and how these mechanisms may have been affected by changes in male-female wage ratios and the one-child policy. We estimate the husband-wife distribution of marriage surplus using the method in Choo and Siow (2008) using provincial variation in and a one per cent sample of the Chinese census. We find suggestive evidence that variations in intra-household resource allocation between husband and wife can explains the increase in sex ratio at birth during the demographic transition in urban Mainland China from 1970s to 1980s.
