Gender Difference, Sex Ratio and Human Rights Reform: A Study of Global Sodomy Law Reform in the Post-WWII Era

演講者簡介 : Professor Chang received his Ph.D. in Economics from Michigan State University in 2009. He is currently a Senior Lecturer at University of Western Australia Business School in Australia. His research fields are Health Economics, Labor Economics, Demographic Economics, and Behavioral Economics.
演講摘要 : This paper investigates the role of gender difference in individual attitudes that shapes public recognition of human rights and its relationship to institutional reform in the context of global sodomy law reform in the post-World War II era. We first use a global survey to exhibit a robust worldwide phenomenon that men are more homophobic than women. Using a panel data of 183 countries, we then show that countries with higher sex ratios—as a proxy of social homophobia—were less likely to decriminalize homosexual conduct than countries with lower sex ratios. Finally, studies of the U.S. and Australia show that states with higher sex ratios were less likely to repeal sodomy law.
