演講者簡介 : Professor Liang received her Ph.D. in Economics at University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1999. She is currently an Associate Research Fellow at the Institute of Economics, Academia Sinica. Her research fields are Industrial Organization, Microeconomics and Mathematical Economics.
演講摘要 : Being "hooked" on tempting goods is a serious problem for today's society. Modeling such behavior with tractable utility functions can help us understand better the predicament facing such "wretched men." We provide an economic, in particular, revealed preference approach, to determine the strength of willpower. In our characterization, while choices within menus that satisfy WARP reveal the trade-of between the normative utility u and the temptation utility v, it is the discontinuity of preferences over menus along with violations of WARP for choices within menus, that reveal the limit w of an individual's willpower in exercising costly self-control.
