  • 演講摘要 : Recent studies postulate evidence in confirming the significance of non-financial institutional quality on remittances-growth nexus. However, there is no consensus on how remittances affect economic development as a result of omitting economics and political institutional quality variables. This paper investigates the role of institutions in influencing the effect of remittances on Malaysia’s capacity in its long-run economic growth over the period 1984-2014. Results from Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) and System Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) indicate that remittances on growth depend on institutional quality. A resilient domestic institutional framework has further heightened the country’s capability in absorbing the positive effects of remittances on economic growth. The policy implication is that an effective domestic institution, with moderate political interference, persistent law and order enforcement, efficient bureaucracy and low degree of ethnic tension, and reasonably corruption act as mediators to better use of remittances in stimulating growth in Malaysia.
