演講摘要 : The past 20 years have witnessed dramatic reductions in U.S. workplace injuries in both manufacturing and non-manufacturing workplaces, as well as a surge in Chinese manufacturing imports. Did Chinese import competition make the manufacturing industries safer? We use a model to show that Chinese imports can increase firm-level injury rates but at the same time decrease industry aggregate injury rates. Our 2SLS regression results indicate that there is a negative impact of Chinese imports on the industry-level and regional-level injury rates. Chinese imports reduce injury rates likely through reducing the employment shares of the more dangerous occupations.
