Constant Churning and Persistent Regularity in the System of Cities: An Evidence from Japan in the Past 30 Years

  • 演講摘要 : This study examines the constant churning and persistent regularity of city development on Japan in the past 30 years. From 1980 to 2010, it is shown that Japan has experienced snowballing growth of certain cities and constant churning of industrial structure of each city. At the same time, persistent regularities in city size distribution and relative industrial composition of cities can also be observed. Through examining and analyzing these data, we find that, among other things: 1) Snowballing growth of cities happens at key transport nodes; 2) Sensitivity to transport costs plays a significant role in replacement of on-average 30% of industries in a city; 3) persistent spatial coordination among industries reflects an industrial hierarchy between larger and smaller cities, which is followed by on-average 70% of industrial locations; 4) Concerning persistent fractal structure in size-spatial distribution of cities, there are small degrees of freedom in influencing the “position” of an individual city within national city system; 5) (3)&(4) can be replicated by microeconomic model.
