Assortative Mating in Economic Status: Analysis Using Data from 3 Million Tax-Returns

演講者簡介 : Professor Chu received his Ph.D. in Economics from University of Michigan at 1985. He is currently a Distinguished Research Fellow at the Institute of Economics, Academia Sinica. His research fields are Population Economics, Law and Economics, Public Economics and Regional Economics.
演講摘要 : The tax authority data of Taiwan allow us to identify nearly 100,000 first-marriage newlywed couples and three million singles of the same cohorts. The income and wealth variables of all these individuals and their parents can be observed at the time right before the couple’s marriage. These rare data help improve our understanding of the assortative matching in economic status. We find, among other things, in Taiwan, 1) the mating pattern in Taiwan is more compatible with the sorting of the economic variables of the couple’s parents than those of the couple; 2) the tendency toward richest-richest match or poorest-poorest match is very strong; 3) the 2SLS estimate of the elasticity between the couple’s parental wealth is large, particularly for the very rich group; 4) the couple’s education complements parental wealth in explaining marriage sorting; 5) assortative matching explains only 2.4% of the maleline intergenerational immobility index, but 24.2% of that of the female-line.
