  • 演講摘要 : We develop a partial equilibrium model to illustrate the forward spillover effects from foreign subsidiaries by incorporating both the foreign capital share channel and the spatial channel. An upward industry foreign subsidiary may generate positive productivity spillovers to a downstream local firm by providing its intermediate inputs that have productivity advantage. We calculate the geographical distance distribution statistics from upstream foreign subsidiaries and use it as a proxy variable for the intermediate input procurement costs of a downstream local firm. A local firm’s productivity increases if the upstream FDI firms take a larger portion in providing intermediate inputs, and this positive relationship is disproportionately strong with low input procurement costs of the downstream local firm. Robustness tests reject alternative explanations that attribute the positive productivity spillovers to agglomeration externality in labor market and capital good market, and the endogenous location choice by multinational firms.
