  • 演講摘要 : The Manpower Utilization Survey (MUS) is one of the commonly used data to estimate the Mincer earnings equation in Taiwan. Under educational attainment, MUS asks for the highest education level attended, while the two major datasets that the Mincerian literature was based (the U.S. Census and Current Population Survey, CPS) ask for years of education or degree receipt. Previous Mincerian estimations in Taiwan that build only on the highest educational attainment question usually assign the same (typical) years of schooling to each highest education level for both graduates and non-graduates (i.e. current students and dropouts). This paper examines its possible consequences when following the same methodology. Using the 1981 MUS, I compare the estimates when using the actual (reported) years in formal school to using the assigned years of schooling. I also propose to incorporate the graduation status in the Mincer equation estimation by subtracting the equivalent years of the “sheepskin effect” from the years of schooling to those without a degree using MUS samples from 2007 onward where graduates can be identified. I then compare the estimates to the case that does not separate graduates from the non-graduates. The results suggest negligible differences to those with and without the information on actual years of schooling and graduation status. Therefore, it supports the previous Mincerian estimations in Taiwan using the MUS.
