Integrated or not? Evaluating integration from the perspective of a neoclassical model

演講者簡介 : Professor Lu received her Ph.D. in Economics from University of California, Los Angeles in 2007. She is currently an Associate Professor at National Tsing Hua University. Her primary research interests are Economic Development, Economic Growth, and Macroeconomics; and secondary are International Finance, Financial Economics, and East Asian Studies.
演講摘要 : A quantitative method based on the wedge methodology is introduced to measure the degree of integration. This new measurement can reveal the types of friction preventing complete integration and the possible conflicts of immediate integration. Using the cases of Germany reunification, North American Free Trade Agreement, and the Eurozone, we find that no integration had attained complete integration. Moreover, moving toward complete integration exerts unbalanced impact on union's members. Finally, moving toward complete integration did not benefit all members of a union or all interest groups of a nation but the benefited group may change over time.
