  • 演講摘要 : Using data from 16 countries from the European Social Survey and the exogenous variation of education attainment across these countries over time due to compulsory schooling reforms, we examine whether education causally affects one’s trust attitude. We find that individuals with higher education attainment show higher levels of generalized trust, perceived fairness and helpfulness of other people. However, these results do not directly translate to trust in such institutions as government and political parties. Overall, to the extent that trust is positively associated with growth, our results suggest that the returns to education can be realized through changing the trust attitude of the people.
