Growth dynamics in regional systems of technological activities – A SVAR approach

  • 演講摘要 : "This paper analyses the causal relationships in regional technological systems within a structural vector auto regression (SVAR) framework. It shows how the regional growth dynamics of economic, research, innovation and educational activities affect each other instantaneously and over time in five different industries. Referring to the type of industry and its knowledge base, expectations are derived on how industry-specific growth dynamics unfold in such regional technological systems. Therefore, the causal structure of four endogenous variables, namely the growth rates of employees, R&D employees, patents, and graduates, is recovered by applying a data-driven identification strategy based on Independent Component Analysis. As the identification relies on the information of non-normality, it is particularly suited to study regional growth processes, which can be characterized by fat-tailed distributions. We find that the patterns in the growth dynamics can be explained by the characteristics of an industry. Knowledge on the causal relations among the various activities in such regional technological systems is of utmost relevance to the design and implementation of policy instruments. In the conclusion, I extend the analysis of growth rate distributions to Chinese firm dynamics and discuss with you some preliminary results from my visiting research period at the Institute of Economics at Academia Sinica."
