演講者簡介 : Professor Lo received her Ph.D. in Economics from Michigan State University, at USA in 2000. She is currently Associate Professor at National Dong Hwa University. Her research fields are Applied Microeconometrics, Labor Economics, Education Economics and Health Economics.
演講摘要 : Population aging is a global phenomenon, particularly in Asia, where it has proceeded more rapidly. The accelerating increase in old-age population has inspired a dramatic growth in the demand for long-term care, which plays a significant role in elderly living arrangements. The majority of previous studies have centered on the experiences in the Western societies that differ substantially from those of the Asian countries in terms of either their living arrangements or social expectations regarding the responsibilities of caring for aging parents. To fill the gap in the literature, we utilize a nationally representative panel data set of Taiwanese elderly to examine how long-term care services influence the residential decision of the elderly in Taiwan. Based on empirical results from a panel multinomial logit model, it is found that long-term care provided outside the family in Taiwan does not encourage “aging in place”. Instead, the aged who receive more help from non-relatives face a higher risk of nursing home entry in the future. The policy implication of our study is that the current long-term care system in Taiwan does not effectively achieve the policy goal of alleviating the need for institutional care.
