演講者簡介 : Shao-Hsun Keng received his Ph.D. in Economics from Iowa State University in 1998. He is currently serving as Associate Professor of Applied Economics at National University of Kaohsiung. His research field is in health economics, human resources, and applied econometrics.
演講摘要 : We exploit a natural experiment in which the National University of Kaohsiung (NUK) amended its academic dismissal policy in fall 2006 to raise the academic standards and only those admitted to NUK in fall 2006 and after were subject to the more stringent dismissal policy. We find that students subject to the stricter dismissal policy are more likely to enroll in leniently graded courses, in particular, among those who failed more credits in the previous semester. In addition, after restricting sample to instructors who taught the same course at least once before and after fall 2006. The results show that instructors in required courses lowered the bar considerably after fall 2006. The percentage of students failed in required courses falls by 30% after policy change. The acceleration of grade inflation after fall 2006 may be largely accounted for by the acceleration of grading leniency from the instructors.
