  • 演講摘要 : Two individuals are asked to make a choice between two alternatives, but their opinions must align with each other in order to receive a benefit. The preference over the alternatives and the benefit derived from alignment are known privately and might vary between the individuals, who can determine whether to announce their choices early or late. This paper examines the announcement timing of different types of individuals, and shows that costs incurred after an individual expresses her opinion change the announcement timing and might improve or impair the total welfare. Applications include the process of reaching consensus in a committee, the dynamics of consumers choosing between technology standards, and group buying that has emerged recently in Asia.
