  • 演講摘要 : This paper is the first to develop a two-country model to take into account trade barriers in exploring the outside patentee’s optimal licensing policy and the optimal number of licenses, as firms produce a homogeneous product and engage in Bertrand competition with spatially discriminatory pricing. The focus of the paper is on the impact of the monopoly profit generated by trade costs. It succeeds in explaining the existence of non-exclusive fixed-fee licensing, which the previous literature has so far failed to predict. It shows that fixed-fee licensing is superior to royalty licensing for an outside patentee under Bertrand competition as trade costs relative to the magnitude of innovation are higher, while the reverse occurs, otherwise.
