演講摘要 : Resource reallocation, especially that of labor, from a low to a high productivity sector results in immediate productivity improvement. Such labor sectoral transformation can play a substantial role in accounting for the significant productivity improvement. In this paper, I develop a benchmark model, which is based on the speed of labor transfer from agricultural to non-agricultural sector in the US, and use the model to quantify the speed of transformation for other economies. I show that economies experienced rapid productivity improvement also experienced rapid transformation. Under the context of Taiwan between 1951 and 2005, examining productivity under a two-sector rather than a one-sector framework reduces the measured productivity growth by 29% in terms of total factor productivity.
