  • 演講摘要 : This paper examines whether computer-based technological change is related to wage inequality in Taiwan using a pseudo panel dataset over the period 1983-2006. We adopt the difference GMM estimation procedure to estimate the wage premium, within-cohort overall wage inequality and the within-cohort college premium, respectively. We use PC access at home as the proxy of the rate of computer-based technological change. The main findings are as follows. (1) PC access at home affects wage structure, and the computer wage premium does not increase over time. (2) Computer-based technological change would raise within-cohort overall wage inequality before the early 1990s, but lower within-cohort overall wage inequality after the early 1990s. (3) The effect of computer-based technological change on the within-cohort college premium is negative and statistically significant since the 1990s. Our finding for the case of Taiwan rejects the skill-biased technical change hypothesis, which is put forward by Katz and Murphy (1992) and which has been widely supported by the U.S. data. (4) Education expansion reduces within-cohort overall wage income inequality since the 1990s.
