  • 演講摘要 : This paper examines the strategies of multiproduct plants in the Taiwanese electronics sector during the 1990s when the sector came under increased competition in the international market. Using plant-level and product-level data, we introduce two measures of product dissimilarity, one at the plant-level and the other at the product-level to capture the technological gaps of product pairs within a multiproduct plant. The plant-level index is used to analyze the decisions of multiproduct plants with respect to their product mix. Our findings suggest that multiproduct plants whose products have large technological gaps are more likely to give up some product lines. The product-level index is used to show that, in the face of increased competition, multiproduct plants exit markets where production technologies are farthest away from their core products and in so doing, perform better than their counterparts who continue to produce a wider range of products.
