  • 演講摘要 : We build a general equilibrium model where growth is driven by new ideas that can have varying degrees of complementarity with previous innovations. The novel feature is that some private agents can appropriate the value of knowledge spillovers that their innovations create. We demonstrate how data on patent citations can be used to measure complementarity between ideas and how the rest of the model can be calibrated to the US economy. We show that we can distinguish three separate characteristics of new ideas that determine an economy’s overall rate of technological progress .namely, quantity, quality, and complementarity with existing knowledge. The three may change independently of one another over time, and each can have distinct macroeconomic effects.
