演講摘要 : How important is the demographic transition for economic growth? To answer this question, this paper constructs a general equilibrium overlapping generations model with endogenous fertility in which demographic change affects growth through three channels: changes in the age composition of the population, the accumulation of physical capital, and the accumulation of human capital. Our quantitative analysis suggests that (1) During the period 1970-2004, demographic change contributed to growth in GDP per capita by about 1.3 percent per year in Taiwan; (2) The interaction between skill-biased technological progress and demographic change promotes human-capital accumulation; (3) When this interaction is taken into account, the human-capital channel is more important than changes in the dependency ratio for growth.
