  • 演講摘要 : In this paper, I explain why the most productive firms, specifically in Informational Technology (IT) industry, might prefer international outsourcing to FDI when launching innovative products. In industries with a low output elasticity of R&D, the most productive firms prefer FDI to outsourcing because the latter incurs larger incompletecontract distortions. On the contrary, in industries with a high output elasticity of R&D, contractors likely honor contracts while R&D investment undertaken by a North firm is sufficiently large because a higher surplus is expected to compensate the incompletecontract costs. This model explains why Apple largely applied outsourcing to launch their iPod.
