演講摘要 : This paper develops a theoretical model for the ecotourism industry such as firefly watching and mangrove tourism, in which the habitat can be sensitive to the tourist. We will incorporate into the model the degradation speed of the renewable natural resource, visiting rate of tourist, accessibility represented by transport cost and entrance fee etc. Two cases of operation behavior will be considered in deriving the equilibrium, one myopic view and the other long-run view. It is shown that under myopic operation in which current profit is the only concern, there will be two stable equilibria, one characterized by a lower level of the natural resource and the other by higher level. And, the lower the entrance cost and/or the earlier the opening-up of the ecotourism potential, the more likely will the low equilibrium occur. In the extreme case of zero entrance cost, the population size of potential tourist becomes critical to the sustainability of the resources. A population size of greater than a certain level will surly lead to the extinction of the resources upon its opening. On the contrary, the ecotourism management aiming at pursuing long-run profit will ensure the sustainable development of the natural resources and always end up the equilibrium with high resource stock, irrespective to the population size and the timing of opening-up. The policy implications of these findings are analyzed in the paper.
