演講摘要 : This paper analyzes the evolving pattern of fragmentation and networking in East Asia from the early 1990s. The paper first provides an overall picture of international trade for the East Asian countries and addresses a significance of machinery trade, particularly machinery parts and components trade, in each East Asian economy as well as a substantial change in commodity composition of exports and imports during the last 10-15 years. The paper, then, decomposes machinery trade of each East Asian country into one-way trade (inter-industry trade), vertical intra-industry trade (vertical IIT), and horizontal intra-industry trade (horizontal IIT), using international trade data at the HS 6-digit-level, to more precisely investigate how the pattern of international trade or the pattern of international production sharing has changed in East Asia in the last decade. After investigating outstanding changes in trade patterns of East Asia in terms of values, commodity compositions, and types of trade, the paper examines micro data of Japanese firms (METI’s Kikatsu dataset) and micro data of foreign affiliates of Japanese firms (METI’s Kaiji dataset) to have a closer look at features of networking in East Asia from the viewpoints of Japanese corporate firms. The paper also provides supporting evidence that intra-firm transactions by Japanese affiliates in East Asia are gradually substituted by arm’s-length transactions in the late 1990s.
