  • 演講摘要 : In this paper we estimate the detrimental effects of married women's earlier family commitments on their later labor market performance using Taiwan data. Two types of family decisions are considered: (1) a married woman who quits working right after marriage and (2) a married woman who lives with her husband's parents for more than five years after getting married. After controlling the endogeneity (self-selection) problem, we find that these family decisions, while being made more than twenty years ago in average, significantly impair a married woman's later labor force participation and earnings. Moreover, although a married woman who made either one of the family decisions earlier in her life is severely discriminated against, we argue that she actually possesses certain characteristics that should have been conducive to better labor market performance.
