演講者簡介 : Yi Lu received his Ph.D. in Economics from University of Hong Kong in 2007. He is currently serving as Assistant Professor of Economics at National University of Singapore. His research field is in Chinese economy, international trade and applied economics.
演講摘要 : This paper investigates whether and how telecommunication, in particular landline telephone, affects the likelihood of out-migration. The identification comes from regional and time variations in the installation of landline telephone across 58 China’s villages from 1993-2000. It is found that the installation of landline telephone significantly and substantially increased the percentage of out-migrant workers. To understand how landline telephone affects out-migration, this paper proposes and tests two potential mechanism: information sharing before and timely contact with left-behind family members after the migration.
