  • 演講摘要 : Tropical Singapore's educational establishments offer plenty of naturally ventilated spaces relative to other built environments such as offices, factories, and malls, in which climate control is predominant. As the climate warms, this is changing. We access all student-level undergraduate course records between 2005 and 2019 at a large university in the rich tropics. We find that an in-sample shift in de-seasoned weather from the coolest to the hottest semester reduces undergraduate students' semester-long course performance by 1.5%. While classrooms and some study spots enjoy air conditioning, many spaces on campus do not, including most dormitory rooms, which has helped curb the university's scope 2 emissions. Using quasi-random variation, we find some evidence that access to dorm air conditioning alleviates part of the impact of ambient heat on student learning.
