演講者簡介 : Professor Ziho Park received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago in 2021. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the National Taiwan University. His research interests are international trade, macroeconomics, and urban economics.
演講摘要 : Using comprehensive data of US establishments, this paper studies the causes of the unprecedentedly sharp decline in employment during the COVID-19 pandemic. We find that businesses reliant on in-person activities lost more employment, demonstrating the importance of work-from-home arrangements in mitigating the economic impact of the pandemic. We show that the government policies intended to limit in-person interactions led to sharper employment declines: businesses subject to mandatory business closures and stay-at-home orders experienced sharper reductions in employment. These patterns are presented across states and establishment size categories. Furthermore, using industry-by-county level analysis, we investigate the role of establishment exit in the employment losses related to teleworkability, mandatory business closures, and stay-at-home orders.
